Airbus’s drone “pseudo-satellite” stayed in the air for 25 days, refreshing a flight record

Airbus' Zephyr S spy drone has been in the air for 25 days, setting a record for the longest flight duration in the Earth's atmosphere.

The Zephyr S is powered by the sun during the day and charges the lithium-sulfur battery for battery-powered nighttime. It has a wingspan of 22.5 meters and can be launched from the shoulders of four soldiers.

The Zephyr S has been in development for more than a year and will be used by the British Army as a high-tech aircraft to monitor targets around the world. Airbus will also develop the Zephyr T.

It is known as a "pseudo-satellite" - where there is no satellite signal, Special Forces soldiers can fly the drone, using a control station to fly within 400 kilometers to function as a satellite.

It can fly at 70,000 feet (21,000 meters), which is twice as high as commercial aircraft.

According to Agence France-Presse, in addition to national security uses, the drone will also be used for maritime surveillance, border patrols and forest fire detection missions.
